Every society dreams of a better future. Yet hope is rarely simple. Sometimes it takes the shape of a utopian vision, imagining a world where everything can be transformed. At other times, it appears as careful, incremental change, shaped by what feels practical and possible. Most of us, however, live somewhere in between. Hope exists in that space between aspiration and reality, between what we can imagine today and what we are still learning to make possible.

The theme this year for alèy 2026, Waves of Hope, invites us to reflect on hope not merely as an emotion, but as a way of thinking, creating, and living. In the South Asian context, hope is often intertwined with everyday struggles for dignity, justice, education, equality, belonging, and freedom. It can be found in acts of resistance, in stories passed across generations, in art and literature that refuse silence, and in communities that continue to imagine better futures despite uncertainty.

Across conversations, readings, performances, workshops, and dialogues, this year's festival asks: What does it mean to hope today? What enables hope, and what stands in its way? How can literature help us imagine more just and inclusive worlds without pretending that change is easy or inevitable? What stories of resilience, care, memory, and solidarity can guide us through uncertain times?
